Couriers needed to deliver adopted Potcakes to new owners
An animal life organization in the Bahamian Islands is looking for volunteers to deliver adopted puppies from the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands to new homes in the United States and Canada.

The adorable pups are rescued from around the islands because spay/neuter programs are not keeping up. The feral dog population of the islands is growing, and more and more litters of puppies are being found and prepared for adoption by families in North America who have heard about the animals plight and have registered to adopt a Potcake, the name given to the orphans because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pots to the stray dogs.

As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving. They grow up to between 40 lb and 60 lb, with 45-50 pounds being the average. These pups need homes.

Potcake Place, the not for profit group sponsoring the adoptions will meet the volunteer couriers at the Provo airport at the time of travel to hand over the young puppy, all paperwork, arrange for check-in and pay the 80 USD immigration fee for the pup.

The volunteer simply has to accompany the pup on to the plane, and place the special Sherpa carry-on bag under the seat in front, and then show the health certificate to customs at the destination airport and hand the pup over to the new owner who will meet them there. The organizers keep in constant contact with the new owner to ensure that the transfer goes smoothly.

Taking an extra carry-on bag on a journey home from the Bahamas can mean the world to a young pup and a family awaiting their new addition. It will also allow Potcake Place to save more lives and find placements in more foster homes.

The following comments are from a volunteer family who brought a Potcake back from the Islands.

"Just wanted to let everyone know how easy it is to courier a Potcake to the US. It actually made leaving a little easier for my 3 kids! They were quite excited to be rescuing a dog from their new favorite island.

We were met at the airport in Provo by the Potcake Place founders, given all of the pup's paperwork, Sherpa bag, etc. Abby, the pup, was given a sedative, and we walked through security together no problem. She was a big hit in the gate waiting area and the kids loved her to pieces.

She got sleepy after about 20 minutes and settled into her carrier. Getting through customs and immigration in Charlotte where we had a layover took one extra step. Then we had to take her out of the carrier to have her walk through security. Put her back in the bag and not another peep until we arrived in Boston where her new owners were anxiously awaiting her arrival.

It was about an 8 hour trip from airport to airport and she did just fine. I strongly encourage everyone to consider giving a Potcake a second chance even if you can't adopt, you can still help by bringing one home to another loving family!"
